Tosa de Mar, the blue paradise of the Catalan coast

Tosa de Mar (Tossa de Mar in Catalan) is a beautiful Catalan town on the Costa Brava, located halfway between the city of Barcelona and the French border, less than 100 kilometers away. This picturesque town in Girona, which belongs to the region of La Selva, stands out mainly for its wonderful walled historic center, one of the most beautiful and best preserved in Spain, as well as the privileged natural environment that surrounds it.

The illustrious French painter of Belarusian origin, Marc Chagall, awarded by the Order of the Legion of Honor of France and author of outstanding works at the Paris Opera or the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, among other recognized works, was amazed with Tosa de Mar back in the early 1930s and named it "the blue paradise".

Years later, around 1950, the legendary actress, Ava Gardner, alongside British actor, James Mason, also surrendered to the charms of Tosa de Mar when they arrived to this town on the Costa Brava to film the movie Pandora and the Flying Dutchman. This gave the international recognition before the tourist boom in Tosa de Mar. The presence of the American star was immortalized when a life-size statue was erected in her honor in a beautiful viewpoint of the village. 

Rich architectural and cultural heritage

This wonderful medieval town treasures a lot of history and has a rich architectural, artistic and cultural heritage. An ideal base to discover all its secrets is to start the route in the photogenic castle of Tosa de Mar. Built between the 12th and 14th centuries with the intention of defending against piracy, it is the only example of a fortified medieval town that still exists on the Catalan coast and is undoubtedly the symbol and flagship of the village.

The best way to access the fortification is through the Vila Vella, the small historic center of Tosa de Mar made up of narrow cobbled streets and where corners full of charm are hidden. Walking around the emblematic walled enclosure both night and day is a real luxury that will not leave anyone indifferent. In addition, the views of the Mediterranean Sea and the rest of the village are amazing. Views from the lighthouse of Tosa, located at the highest part of the wall, are also more than recommended.

Very close to Vila Vella is the neighborhood of Sa Roqueta, an old fishing village that with its white houses and the taste of the sea continues to keep this seafaring spirit intact. Both in the neighborhood of Sa Roqueta and on the neighboring promenade of Tosa de Mar there is an exquisite gastronomic offer with delicious specialties of the region such as rice, fresh fish or seafood. The most typical dish and rooted in the seafaring tradition of the town is the 'Cim i Tomba', which is made in a casserole with fish of the day, fresh vegetables, potatoes and allioli.
