History of the Port de la Selva

Port de la Selva is a port with an ancient maritime tradition and this has been reflected in its architecture, gastronomy, culture and traditions. At first, the current town was the fishermen's houses that lived in the town of Selva de Mar which is 4 km away. They were used to store utensils and fish. In 1725 the construction of the first church began and, finally, the Port de la Selva became independent from Selva de Mar.

Although it has always been a fishing port, in the 19th century the oil and wine trade gained prominence, until the phylloxera plague attacked crops. During 1920s, some intellectuals discovered this town and tourism became more important as an economic factor. Even so, the Port de la Selva has always maintained the charm of a small fishing village.
