Lloret de Mar, a favorite destination in the Mediterranean

Lloret de Mar is one of the most important tourist destinations in Catalonia and the rest of SpainEvery year, especially during the summer months in the height of the high season, thousands of tourists come from all over the world to its shores bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, mainly attracted by its good climate and the quality of its beaches and coves.

However, this popular coastal municipality located in the south of the emblematic Costa Brava offers its visitors much more than sun and sand. In fact, trends are changing and interest arouses more and more during the months of less affluence by travelers wanting to discover its attractions that make it really special, such as the nature that surrounds it or its important cultural and historical heritage.

It is true that Lloret de Mar earned a dubious reputation not so long ago due to the type of tourism that frequented the town. Essentially young college kids wanting to party, coming here seduced by its lively nightlife and often turning out to be somewhat wild.

But things have changed. Local authorities took action on the matter and in 2011 approved a regulation that allowed the model to be renewed and guarantee coexistence between neighbors and tourists. This has led to the ostensible improvement of relations with the resident population and also family and more mature tourism has regained momentum.

As a consequence of all these improvements, Lloret de Mar has become a real option when buying a home on the Costa Brava.

What you can't miss in Lloret de Mar

Lloret de Mar hides surprising corners full of charm and with a rich heritageA good starting point to discover it is its promenade, the main point of interest of the city and an area always full of life.

At the north entrance of the promenade is the Museum of the Sea. Located in the old Indian house of Can Garriga, a visit to this three-story building of great historical value is perfect to understand the town's seafaring past and to hear the stories of the many people from Lloret de Mar who decided to embark and cross the Atlantic heading to the Americas in the 19th century to make a fortune. Some, like the former owner who had Can Garriga built, Enric Garriga i Mataró, were lucky, others were not so lucky.

A few steps away, in the center of the town, the church of San Román, one of the architectural symbols of the Costa Brava, rises solemnly. Built between 1509 and 1522, it combines Catalan Gothic art with Romanesque and Renaissance influences. It stands out for the colorful mosaics of its modernist chapels that were added at the beginning of the 20th century.

Modernism enthusiasts also cannot miss a visit to the Modernist cemetery in Lloret de Mar. Declared a Site of Cultural Interest and belonging to the European Cemetery Route, it preserves an important Indian footprint, since it was reformed in the 19th century with the money of the Indian families who entrusted prestigious architects and sculptors of the time to build their mausoleums. The entire venue has authentic modernist art jewels with infinite details.

Another of the essential tourist spots in Lloret de Mar are the Santa Clotilde Gardens. Located on a cliff and with spectacular panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the rugged coastline of the Girona coast, they have Italian Renaissance style and are considered one of the best Mediterranean botanical gardens in Europe.

Beaches, coves and daiquiris

The best way to get to know the beaches and coves of the Costa Brava is to walk along the coast through the Caminos de Ronda. In Lloret de Mar there are two wonderful stretches on both sides of the beach of Lloret, located in the urban core. The path that runs along the northern part starts from one of the best beaches in Lloret de Mar, in Sa Caleta. This beautiful cove is full of fishing boats moored in the sand and on top of the adjoining rock you can see the Castillo de los Plaja, one of the most symbolic and photographed postcard images of the Catalan coast.

In the south, from the Castillo de San Juan and towards the wonderful Playa de Santa Cristina, the section runs through beautiful rocky and sandy beaches such as Playa de Fenals, the largest beach in Lloret de Mar. It also runs through the beautiful Cala Sa Boadella, with its crystal clear waters.

Finally, we definitely cannot find a better way to end the day with a refreshing frozen daiquiri and enjoy the sunset on the magnificent terrace of the bar in Cala Banys. This well-known Cuban cocktail had its origins in Lloret de Mar. Constantí Ribalaigua emigrated with his family in 1899 from Lloret de Mar to Havana and worked in the emblematic Floridita local in the capital of Cuba. Ribalaigua ended up running the premises and even won the admiration of Ernest Hemingway for the quality of his cocktails.

Its incredible beaches and Mediterranean quality of life make buying a property for sale in Lloret de Mar one of the most popular options for international tourists.
