The origins of this small municipality with a sea flavor, located in the heart of the Bajo Ampurdán region and, with just 4,000 inhabitants, date back to prehistory. However, its period of greatest splendor took place during the Middle Ages, its footprint is still reflected today with the presence of the most imposing bastion in the town, the castle of Begur.   

 

The fortification is strategically located on top of a hill in the center of the town and was erected in 1019 by order of the feudal lord Arnust de Begur. In these last thousand years of hectic history, the fortress has witnessed countless war episodes. It is undoubtedly the most representative symbol of Begur and a recommended visit. Access to it is really comfortable and suitable for all ages. In addition, the panoramic view of the Costa Brava coastline from its fantastic viewpoint is simply spectacular.

The deep historical and patrimonial personality of the medieval center is evident through the streets of its charming old town. A clear example is the five defense towers that were built between the 15th and 16th centuries to protect it from pirate attacks.

 

Admiring the houses of the Begur Indians is another of the main tourist attractions in the area. Currently there are around fifteen in the center of the town. These architectural jewels were built by the local people from Begur who successfully returned after seeking a better life in America, mainly on the Caribbean islands of Cuba and Puerto Rico. Most retain their colonial style and have been restored. Some of them can be visited and even stayed in them, as they have been converted into charming boutique hotels.

How to get to Begur

 

Reaching Begur by car: It is the best option and also allows the travelers to get to know the rest of the region in their own vehicle. There are 133 km from Barcelona to Begur and it is accessed via the AP-7 motorway towards Girona - France. Take exit 9A-9B (Vidreres / Lloret de Mar), continuing in the direction of Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Playa de Aro on the C-35, continuing in the direction of Palamós (C-31) and then taking the GI-653 road Begur direction. 

 

From the border with France to Begur there are 78 km and it is accessed by the N-II towards Figueres and then continue on the C-31 towards Torroella de Montgrí, continuing towards Pals and finally reaching Begur . 

 

Getting to Begur by train: The closest train station in Begur is Flaçà, 31 km away. You can check schedules and prices on the website: www.renfe.com. Once in Flaçà, there are no direct buses to Begur and it is necessary to change trains at Palafrugell. 

 

Reach Begur by plane: At the airport Girona-Costa Brava (GRO), the closest to Begur (56 km), arrive regular flights from several cities in Spain and Europe. 

 

Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN) receives international flights from Europe and the rest of the world and is located 140 km from Lloret de Mar. 


The closest airport to Begur from the south of France is the Perpignan- Rivesaltes Airport (PGF), located 112 km away.
