Pals, a beautiful medieval town on the Costa Brava

Pals is small town in Girona located in the Baix Empordà areaabout 40 kilometers from Girona, the capital of the region. It is bordered on the north by Torroella de Montgrí, on the west by the municipalities of Fontclara and Sant Feliu de Boada, and on the south by the charming fishing village of Begur.             

 

This small town has the privilege of being one of the most charismatic of the Costa Brava. The population is around 2,500 inhabitants, although during the summer months it can be doubled due to the strong magnetism that Pals plays on the thousands of tourists who visit it each year.

How to get to Pals?

 

Arrive in Pals by car 

 

If accessed from the south of Francethe most effective and recommended option is to take the A-9 motorwaythen follow the C-31, with direct access to PalsTo get an idea of the distances, the journey by car between the French town of Perpignan and Pals is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.          

 

From Barcelona take directly the AP-7 with destination Girona/Francethen take the exit to Sant Feliu de Guíxols (C-35), and finally continue to Palamos via the C-31 until you see the signs indicating how to get to Pals.           

 

Arrive in Pals by bus

 

The bus company Sarfa reaches Pals from different points of Catalonia. From Barcelona you can take the bus in the North Station and also from the bus station in the city center of Girona.     

 

Arrive in Pals by train

 

It is not possible to access Pals by train, as this type of infrastructure is not available. However, you can arrive from France or other territories in Spain to the station of Girona through the line RENFE SNCFThe journey from Perpignan to Girona is only 40 minutes by fast train.        

 

 

Historic center of Pals

 

Pals has one of the most beautiful medieval historical centers of the Costa Brava, where stands out the tower of Romanesque origin built between the XI and XIII centuries, also known as torre de las horas.

       

 

 

A simple walk through the medieval town of Pals is great idea to start the day. Its precious and cobbled streets, original medieval walls and Gothic style old buildings are just some of the attractions to visit this authentic jewel of the Costa Brava.             

 


 

Best beaches and points of interest in Pals 

 

Pals beach

 

A little away from the village of Pals at about km of distance, we find the Playa de Pals, one of the  largest sand beaches on the Costa Brava. Lying on this golden sandy beach, walking along its kilometers of protected dunes or resting under the Mediterranean sun while enjoying spectacular views of the Medes Islands are some of the reasons to visit Pals Beach.             

 

Playa de Illa Roja

 

The Playa de Illa Roja is probably one of the most photographed beaches in the Costa Brava. Its impressive rock in the middle of the beach has been reflected in many postcards during the last decades .

Montgrí Natural Park, Medes Islands and the Baix Ter

 

Pals is located in the heart of the Natural Park of Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter, a natural area with a protected area of about 8,500 hectares of land and sea. 

 

Nature lovers will be able to enjoy numerous activities both on and offshore. Hiking, cycling, kayaking, windsurfing, paddle surfing and scuba diving are some of the most recommended activities.
